Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Alfred Jabu Numpang said when synergy was applied especially between oil palm estate operators and cattle breeders, maintenance and fertiliser costs would be reduced. “Oil palm itself is already quite profitable but if you put cattle in the estate, it can reduce maintenance and fertilisers costs. “This is good synergy and it is already proven successful in some areas under Sarawak Land Consolidation and Rehabilitation Authority (Salcra),” he told a press conference after opening the ‘Malaysia Veterinary Service Department’s Innovation Day 2010’ at Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (Unimas)’s hall yesterday.

The Innovation Day which will end on June 22 received about 800 participants from throughout the country.
Jabu explained that it would be more beneficial to rear cattle rather than goats in oil palm estates as goats were a lot more intensive in terms of labour requirement and only a small area is needed to breed them. He added since oil palm estates have large areas the cattle could also be let loose.

Veterinary Service Department director Datuk Dr Abdul Aziz Jamaluddin was also present. Yesterday’s event also saw the launching of ‘Malaysian Journal of Veterinary Research’ and awards presentation for Research Innovation, Products Innovation, Process Innovation, Technology Innovation, Service Innovation, Management Research Article Writing and Technical Research Article Writing.
