Two Sarawak breeders rewarded

Two Sarawak breeders rewarded

KUALA LUMPUR: A ruminant breeder from Mukah and a livestock entrepreneur from Kuching-Serian Road were among award winners at the Malaysian Agriculture, Horticulture and Agro-tourism Show (MAHA) 2010 launched by Prime Minister Najib Tun Razak at the Malaysian Agro Exposition Park Serdang (MAEPS) last Saturday.

The two bagged for the first time, the National Awards for Successful Ruminant Ent repreneur and the Successful Non-Ruminant Entrepreneur Categories, respectively.

Hajah Fatimah bint i Suhaibo, who is the manager of FG Multifarm received her award as the National winner in the Successful Ruminant Entrepreneur category for her success as the entrepreneur for a goat and cattle farm, FG Multifarm at Km28, Mukah- Balingian coastal highway.

Her farm holds around 1,800 heads of various breeds of goats, sheep and cattle at its peak, and currently supplies domestic demands, and have also made exports of live animals to Brunei.

In addition, FG Multifarm also processes solid and liquid fertilisers from animal wastes from the farm. This helps the farm to practice ‘zero waste’ farming with active local inputs to manage costs.

The farm also formulates its own animal feed from local resources and maize.

Maize is planted by Mukah Agro Farm of which Hajah Fatimah is the Chairman and CEO.

Mukah Agro Farm applies the concept of contract farming in developing ‘idle’ land in Mukah.

It is able to do this by focusing on the hardcore poor who are listed in the e-kasih programme, with the help of TEKUN.

In addition, the farm also provides employment to single mothers in the processing of farm products before they are dispatched to the market.

Both FG Multifarm and Mukah Agro Farm offer attachment training to local entrepreneurs, university students and the Semenggok Agriculture Institute.

Hajah Fatimah also won in the state-level Small Ruminant Category at the state-level Farmers, Breeders and Fishermen’s Day (HPPN) held at Betong recently.

In the same event, Sarawak’s premier livestock breeder, Dr Ng Siew Thiam from QL Livestock Farming Sdn Bhd, Kuching, won the National level Successful Non-ruminant category.

Ng is the Executive Director of QL Livestock Farming, a 90- acre farm at Mile 25, Kuching- Serian Road.

The farm has more than 600,000 chickens and produces around 400,000 eggs daily.

The farm is fully automated.

The farm’s products are supplied to the local market and exported to Indonesia and Hong Kong.

The farm also produces its own animal feed from maize grains imported from India, Argentina and Thailand and employs 180 workers.

Ng expressed interest in buying locally produced maize of which his co-winner Hajah Fatimah Suhaibo is a leading producer in Sarawak.

The farm also offers attachment training to livestock breeders, university students and local entrepreneurs.

Ng was also a winner in a similar category at the state-level Farmers, Breeders and Fishermen’s Day held at Betong recently.

Swiftlet farming ‘a lucrative business’

WITH prices reaching as high as RM10,000 per kilogramme, it’s little wonder why questions on swiftlet farming dominated question time in the state assembly yesterday morning. Questions ranged from the issuance of licences to the mushrooming of bird “hotels” to the viability of swiftlet farming in some coastal areas of the state to revenue generated from the export of the bird’s nests.  The questions were raised by Julaihi Narawi (BN-Sebuyau), Datuk Wan Abdul Wahab Wan Sanusi (BN-Sadong Jaya) and Abu Seman Jahwie (BN-Jemoreng).

Assistant Minister in the Chief Minister’s Department Naroden Majais, in reply, said from the Forest Department’s records, bird’s nests production has been on the increase over the last two years. He said the volume harvested had increased by 36 per cent during the period.  In 2008, 2,094.6kg was harvested while last year it was 2,854kg.

Naroden said bird’s nests farming was a lucrative business in the state.  On the control of the mushrooming of “bird hotels” in the state, Naroden said inspections and checks are carried out twice a year. “From last year until March this year, 418 illegal bird ‘hotels’ have been detected.”

He said the Forest Department issued notices to the premise owners and they had been advised to apply for the appropriate licences if the location of their bird “hotels” did not contravened existing laws and regulations.

In rural areas, bird “hotels” should not be within 500m radius of urban areas.

Pointing out that bird’s nests was a lucrative business, Naroden said in 2008, the export of birds’ nests was valued at RM8.7 million.  It was RM11.41 million last year and this year until mid-last month, the export value was RM7.03million.

Local authorities to move Animal Shelter to another location

Borneo Post

KUCHING: Rapid urbanisation taking place at Kota Sentosa — one of Kuching’s fastest growing suburban areas — has left the authorities with no choice but to move the Animal Shelter to a new location. Another reason for the Animal Shelter to move to a new ‘home’ is because it has reached full capacity and could pose health hazard to nearby residents.

At present, Sarawak Society of Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SSPCA) takes care of 130 cats and 60 dogs at the Animal Shelter. Housing and Urban Development Minister Datuk Amar Abang Johari Tun Openg, who revealed the plan to relocate the Animal Shelter yesterday, said the new location has been identified to be somewhere between Batu Kawah and Bau. “When the current shelter was being set up in 1990, the surrounding area was empty. But as more development took place in Kota Sentosa, the current location is now deemed unsuitable. “We are looking into a new place somewhere between Batu Kawah and Bau, and not in the city centre,” he said.

Abang Johari, who is also Satok assemblyman, mentioned this to reporters after opening the SSPCA first-ever Charity Food Fair at the Civic Centre yesterday. To a question, he said the area size as well as the costing details for the new Animal Shelter were yet to be finalised. He nonetheless hoped the relocation of the shelter could be implemented within the next one or two years. “The new shelter will act as a confinement place for stray animals, and doctors and veterinary personnel will be there to ensure that the animals are well taken care of,” he said, adding the land allocated will be slightly bigger than the current one.
He also explained that as  Urban Development Minister, it is his duty to ensure that the city is clean and healthy, and to have stray animals around is not good for the image of Kuching.

According to him, there could be more than 150 stray cats and dogs in the city at one time and this does not reflect well on the city. “The public awareness is very important so that they are more caring towards their pet animals, and not dump them away anyhow,” he said. Meanwhile, SSPCA public relations committee Dona Drury-Wee welcomed the announcement by Abang Johari as good news and big relief for the association.
“Our shelter at the moment is surrounded by shophouses and we had asked for a three- to-four acre piece of land to move our shelter from its current location,” said Wee who revealed that she had met Abang Johari to discuss the matter two months ago.

On the charity food fair, Wee described the response as overwhelming as most of the food and items were sold out. “With 40 participating stalls, we hope to raise around RM60,000 to RM70,000 as we need some financial boost to manage the current shelter such as the rising operational cost and pet food,” she said.

Malaysia Veterinary Service Department’s Innovation Day 2010

Dimaklumkan bahawa Bahagian Veterinar, Jabatan Pertanian akan menjadi hos Hari Veterinar 2010 pada 18 hingga 21 Jun 2010 bertempat di Dewan Unimas, UNIMAS, Samarahan.

Planters, breeders urged to synergise for mutual benefit

KOTA SAMARAHAN: The synergy between animal breeders and plantation operators will increase productivity of both sectors in the state.
DOING THE TOUR: Jabu being briefed by an exhibitor at the Innovation Day exhibition.
DOING THE TOUR: Jabu being briefed by an exhibitor at the Innovation Day exhibition.
Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Alfred Jabu Numpang said when synergy was applied especially between oil palm estate operators and cattle breeders, maintenance and fertiliser costs would be reduced. “Oil palm itself is already quite profitable but if you put cattle in the estate, it can reduce maintenance and fertilisers costs. “This is good synergy and it is already proven successful in some areas under Sarawak Land Consolidation and Rehabilitation Authority (Salcra),” he told a press conference after opening the ‘Malaysia Veterinary Service Department’s Innovation Day 2010’ at Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (Unimas)’s hall yesterday.

The Innovation Day which will end on June 22 received about 800 participants from throughout the country.
Jabu explained that it would be more beneficial to rear cattle rather than goats in oil palm estates as goats were a lot more intensive in terms of labour requirement and only a small area is needed to breed them. He added since oil palm estates have large areas the cattle could also be let loose.

Veterinary Service Department director Datuk Dr Abdul Aziz Jamaluddin was also present. Yesterday’s event also saw the launching of ‘Malaysian Journal of Veterinary Research’ and awards presentation for Research Innovation, Products Innovation, Process Innovation, Technology Innovation, Service Innovation, Management Research Article Writing and Technical Research Article Writing.

Hello, and Goodbyes...

The new 2010-2011Committee has been elected...new and younger blood are slowly but surely coursing through the veins of the SVA, hopefully to give new life to a weary and patient heart : ) .
Three Presidents have had the final salute...Dr Hsiung, Dr Sia,  and now Dr Chin giving their farewell speeches and jokes. All had a wonderful dinner at the Banquet. Kudos to the organising committee for the smooth running of the function ( it was almost "gala" like and very grand...) and the delicious menu on which much thoughts have obviously been spent. There wasa good blend of those in DOA, private sector and the industry, and we hope that this will be a springboard to greater things. Maybe also time to say goodbye to the SVA Newsletter?...as it is quite difficult to coax enough enthusaism from most members to pen an article or some news-bits for the newsletter... = (
Maybe members can send in their comments/feedback on whether in these days of Twitter/SMS and surat layang, our newsletter has outlived its usefulness?
