SSPCA

MEDICAL TREATMENT: Minnie is seen with a freshly disinfected wound. —SSPCA photo
KUCHING: The Sarawak Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SSPCA) has called for better enforcement from the authorities in response to animal cruelty cases.

SSPCA president Dona Drury Wee said although the society has no authority to seize abused pets or arrest errant owners, it often gets requests from the public to rescue pets. Wee explained that SSPCA could only advise owners to treat their pets better and that only the police and the Sarawak Department of Veterinary Services have the authority to act according to the law.

“Both departments need to be more proactive about it. If people realise that they can get away with abusing their pets, they will just do it,” she told The Borneo Post and Utusan Borneo yesterday. She suggested the police and Veterinary Department set up a hotline for animal abuse cases. Drury Wee was speaking in response to the SSPCA’s latest rescue of two puppies — Mickey and Minnie — estimated to be about four months old.

The puppies were released to SSPCA last weekend by the owner, who ignored the group’s advice to give the animals proper care. Shelter veterinarian Dr Davies Belayong said both puppies had picked up canine distemper in addition to experiencing a long period of starvation and ill-treatment. “We must educate the public that animals should not be treated like property, but like family,” he said.

Mickey has since died, while Minnie is expected to eventually succumb to her illness. Shelter manager Richard Lim said both puppies were friendly despite being reduced to skin and bones. “Minnie has an open wound on her back, which was full of maggots that we had to clean out,” he said, adding that the shelter is making sure she gets to live out the last of her days comfortably and with a full belly.

Rambling round the farms 1....

Have you ever heard of  Earth Alliance? No, it is not another political party, NGO, or the latest alien Space Invaders invading your children iPads,iPhone or TV screens..:-)
I have been to a few farms im my days , and I would like to share some of the experiences with you in these ramblings...starting with Earth Alliance Farm.
It is  a farm located along Jalan Jugaan, Siniawan, with 100 plus heads of Kambing Katjang crosses and some dairy type goats. The farm attempts to produce free-range poultry, eggs, goat milk and meat, and green vegetables in an organic and sustainable way.
The farm is located in lovely undulating land by a river, and most of the local gosts are lively, active and in great body condition. In addition  to grazing or being fed  local grasses such as Axonoppus spp; Ischaemun spp and Paspalum spp, the goats were given wet soya waste, coarse salt mineral vitamin mix and other supplementary feeds.

Mixed Kambing Katjang goats with salt lick in pen

Free range broilers under portable sheds

On the flip side, if you buy in unknown breeders from various sources, you may end up with extra baggage, as seen in some goat with sores on the mouth, coronorary bands and lower extremities. Any idea what this might be?

Sores on coronary bands, also involving mouths and lips.

FROM THE EDITOR.....

Dear SVA members,
As you may have realised, 2010 was a year of  hibernation for the Newsletter, not least because I, as the Editor, was immersed im many business and other equally trivial pursuits..
Money, as they say, "cannot be finished earning" and when the EXCO applied CPR to ourselves, we get a new lease of life for the next 2 years...ahem.
I also realise that I  better activate the newletter in the digital form through this blog so that I pass on a live and not a comatose inheritance to the next Editor.
Now,  after having a tip from the president that people log in  mainly to see their pixs, I will start by putting mine on...with my new status as a born again SVA Editor...!
Will write more, and canvass members personally to post, or send articles  to me to do the necessary...I janji!
