MAVP Conference Highlights
To an old dog like me from the old school of training in pathology where we learn its ABC from left to right, it was quite refreshing to view histo slides and hear terms like Mast cells,mitotic figures, cytoplasm/nuclear ratios,Round Cell tumour,BLET...even though I couldn't understand half of it. Like my mum used to say, you stay long enough in mud, you emerge half a buffalo so I guess I can acquire some polish from the conference.
To me , some of the highlights include the info from Dr Kamarruddin that during the HPAI ( Bird flu) scare in W M' sia in 2004, 2006 and 2007, the economic losses were RM 30M,22M and 15M respectively. These include
the cost of managing the outbreaks,compensation, loss of trade, income ,etc. We shudder to think of the impact of Influenza A H1N1...
The bad news is that Nipah virus is still circulating in reservoir animals, plotting a comeback like Pakatan...
A "new" disease of goats I learnt is Gid (Staggers, sturdy) or Coenurosis caused by a metacestode. Thought that this disease only occurs in history books, the deserts, or Africa...Also CAE ( Caprine Arthritis Encephalitis) with head tilt,circling, shifting lameness, reluctance to rise.....a sobering thought is that I could have missed this in a few adult goats having nervous signs which went through our practice.
Another highlight and a compliment to the innovative and creative ability of the vet is the Cytopathology Rapid Stain put out by my old friend Dr Yeoh Eng Cheong...He was too modest to mention the brand but we are using the KY Rapid Stain in our clinic. Congrats are in order to Dr and Mrs Yeoh as the son is graduating this year as a vet from UPM....
I have to say that I enjoyed and learnt a lot from the presenters, including those from Myanmar, Iraq and Africa. I have a chance to asked an Iraqi presenter ( Assoc. Prof Dr Karim Al-Jashamy of MSU) an important question...where to find the best place for hommus in Kl...!

An Intro to Dr Wendy Lim.....

Those of you who log on may have noticed the little picture box at the bottom left of our blogsite ....you will see the handsome faces of Dr Adrian and Dr Chuo and a lil pix with the tag Wendy Lim....
Dr Wendy Lim is from Sarawak and an UPM graduate who has gone over to the States and is practising there. This charming, talented and adventurous lady is a loss to the state and Malaysia...but will be a valuable asset to Obama's rainbow nation. Dr Wendy is now having sleepless nights with the addition of a lil princess to her family...CONGRATS!! and may you have MORE...!!
I have invited her to write in to our blog on life as a vet in the US of A....or little tips on practice or coping with motherhood.. : ))
BTW, the Vet Pathology Conference tomorrow at HarbourView will have topics on Swine Influenza, IBD,Boer Goat diseases,NDV, macaques,Cytology and even Beached Whales!

Continuing my earlier post on N1N1 as my writing shortcircuited......!
I believe we should not use mass vaccination of our pigs as one of the first line of defence. I don't see Kiwi farmers rushing to vaccinate their pigs, and their stake are higher than ours in terms of export value , food safety, security, etc.
We need to increase our biosecurity not only at the borders but also at each farm level. There never is as good a time as NOW to adopt the good husbandry practices and other measures under SALT. SIV is easily destroyed by most farms disinfectants. Regular fogging and spraying of pens, sheds,equipments and vehicles would bring immense benefits to farm health and productivity as experienced in our farms during the Nipah scare.

Influenza A H1N1....where 's the fire??

The hot news in the media and online forum is the H1N1 virus making its way across borders. Strangely on the local vet websites, only a few dared to post anything...Dr KPC, Dr HT and Dr AR...most are sitting on their hands/mouths?.

I just returned from NZ where there are confirmed 6 cases, and they seem to be very sane and methodical in their Emergency Response Plan. We seem to be all at sea on the vet front in Malaysia although the MOH and all the CIQ people are doing all the right things so far. Bravos and kudos to the masked port health staff at the entry points. They are the ones who deserve some incentives or a step up in their payscales when this blows over.

The swine influenza virus H1N1 has been around for ages ( 30 years ..a long time in these IT age). many pigs exposed to Greyhaired vets like myself would recollect that we got free gifts from the States in the late 1980s when imported breeders cause a round of coughing and respiratory complications in our local farms ( the SIV diagnosed then was written up in the Kajian Veterinar). So, my question, where's the fire?

We need to be pragmatic in our approach, as more questions will emerge and more answers are going to evolve from the little bits of puzzles that researchers, virologists, epidemeologists, etc are working on.
